UN Official: Tamkeen a successful model
UN delegation praises successful model of training visually impaired.

Tamkeen, the non-profit training centre for the visually impaired, has been hailed by a UN Official for its exemplary role in providing technology, training, support and counselling to its students to enable them to achieve qualifications in IT, English and ‘soft skills’.

Sheikha Hissa Al Thani, the United Nations’ Special Rapporteur on Disability, received a personal invitation from Dr. Abdulla Al-Karam, Director of Tamkeen, to visit its centre at Dubai Knowledge Village. Along with a retinue from the UN, Sheikha Hissa toured the facilities and met some of Tamkeen’s members to learn more about its excellent work in providing education for the visually impaired.

“Tamkeen is a unique initiative that should be considered an excellent example to publicise to the world how the disabled can easily achieve qualifications and vary their job prospects,” says Sheikha Hissa.

“Tamkeen is an initiative worth distinguishing, because qualifying individuals who have special needs is one of the things that the UN tries to promote and Tamkeen is a successful model.”

“We are honoured by this visit from the Office of the Special Rapporteur on Disability and thank her for promoting the hard-working efforts of Tamkeen,” says Dr Abdulla Al-Karam. “This visit is very important for us in that we get to know what’s happening internationally and the United Nations are aware of our efforts. Through this connection we can extend our services to the region and to the world.”

The Office of the UN Special Rapporteur on Disability seeks to create a world free of all forms of discrimination, obstacles and barriers. Sheikha Hissa was appointed Special Rapporteur on Disability in June 2003. She is entrusted with the task of monitoring and assessing the implementation of the Standard Rules with the objective of enhancing and advancing the status of persons with disabilities throughout the world.
