HH Sheikh Mohammed issues decree establishing Dubai Education Council
HH General Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and UAE Defence Minister, i n his capacity as Chairman of the Dubai Executive Council, has issued a decree, calling for the establishment of the Dubai Education Council, a body whose major objective is to improve Dubai's educational sector to match international standards without compromising the UAE's cultural and ideological principles.

According to Decree no. 11 of 2005, the new council, which is to be annexed to the Dubai Executive Council, shall be chaired by Ahmed Bin Byat, Director General of the Dubai Technology and Media Free Zone.

Other members of the Council include Mohammed Ali Zainal, Abdul Lateef Abdulla Al Mulla,
The decree urges the council to exercise its powers in cooperation and coordination with all the education-related bodies in the country. The Council, according to the decree, shall be responsible for the following: Make suggestions on suitable systems for improving education in the Emirate of Dubai by referring those suggestions to the Dubai Executive Council, draw educational criteria for various education sectors in the emirate and ensure the implementation of these criteria, improve the role of educational institutions in such a way that would boost their participation in the future, launch educational initiatives which would contribute to the improvement of competence and educational standard in the emirate, cooperate with the ministry of education and other concerned bodies in developing education and spread awareness on the importance of sustainable development of education.

Article II of the decree states that the tenure of council membership shall be three renewable years, beginning from the date of issuance of the decision for the appointment of the members, while Article IV says council meeting shall be convened, at least, once in a month at the invitation of the council chairman, who shall decide the time and venue of the meetings. Not less than ten meetings shall be held in a year, while the first meeting shall be held within two weeks from the date of issuance of this decision, July 13, 2005, the Article added.
